Community Medicine

Division Background and Goals

Community Medicine is a cornerstone of our institution, and integration of ED patients into the community of healthcare providers is both a focus and a major challenge for EM practitioners. OUDEM understands and embraces our mandate to care for all in the community, without regard to economic status. In the ED, our residents and faculty see patients from all walks of life. The Division of Community Medicine strives to insure that high-quality acute care is rounded out by meaningful access to longitudinal follow-up.

The Division of Community Medicine works closely with other components of OUDEM, to integrate the philosophy of community-based care into Department efforts. For example, we have ongoing work on community-based disaster response and prehospital care, in close cooperation with OUDEM’s Division of EMS and with the Oklahoma Disaster Institute.
